I received a prayer request once from a mother whose son-in-law just got a new job after being laid off a year ago. Her request was that God provide a car for her daughter’s family so that he can keep the job. I for one thought that this was a very noble request and submitted it to our prayer warrior team.
However, one thing in this request caught me off guard.
She stated “I know it’s wrong to ask God for material things but they really need it.” Can someone tell me where did people get the idea that making a request for something you need is wrong? Who is preaching this madness? God never specified what we can ask Him for. All we need to do is make our requests known with a sincere heart, right motive and mustard seed faith.
It is because many have this erroneous belief stuck in their heads that they lose out on blessings. God wants us to make our requests known to him through Prayer and Supplication not doubt and hesitation. What’s the worst that can happen? He’ll say NO. I’d rather ask God and get a NO than not ask him and pass on a YES.
God is not just some deity up there that dictates orders. He is a loving and compassionate God. He cares about every aspect of our lives. He is not just our God, He’s our FRIEND. Israel Houghton has it right when he sings:
I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
He calls me FRIEND.
God desires a personal relationship with us. One where we can come boldly before him and tell him our hurts, concerns, desires and dreams. He wants a personal and intimate relationship. There is nothing too menial to ask God. If he could care for the itty bitty spider, how in the world can you not have faith that he’ll take care of you?
Whatever your petition may be, come BOLDLY before the throne of your Heavenly Father and tell him all about it. Do you have a petition that you thought God would punish you for asking for? Is it sincere? Is your motive in line with the Word of God? Do you have the mustard seed faith that he can and will answer? If you answered yes to all of these questions, THEN ASK HIM ALREADY!
I pray that this devotion will inspire you to come boldly before the Lord and get your prayers answered.
Remember we would love to pray for you. Submit your prayer requests HERE.
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?- Romans 8:32
Thank you for reminding me that I can come to you t anytime and make ALL of my requests known. Thank you for not only being my God but also my FRIEND. Teach me how to come boldly before your throne at all times and help me to develop that mustard seen faith that will move the mountains in my life..
This morning I feel like I have been hit by tractor trailer. Every joint in my body is hurting and I can barely get out of bed. My parents kept calling out for me thinking that I had overslept but I couldn’t muster the strength to let them know. When I finally did, my mom came over and started to cry and worry like any mom would.
What are we going to do? You’re killing yourself working full-time and going to school full-time. God can’t let anything happen to you, what would we do?
I calmed her down by just passing my pain off as fatigue. Obviously, this was far from the truth. (As I am writing this devotional, my shoulder joints are killing me)
I admit that things are a bit rough for my family this season and we can’t afford any calamities, disasters, or deaths to come even close. However, I refuse to live life worrying about what I can’t handle. Worrying does nothing but dwindle our faith. When things get rough that’s when my God is my shelter. I run to Him and hide under the shadow of His wings.
Many times the enemy will play our current situation on repeat just to rattle us and cause us to renounce our faith. When he does this, I remind him of Job and how his end rewards were greater than his suffering. I remind him of how faithful God has been in the past. I remind him that he tried this with me before and look where God has brought me.
We need to learn how to speak back to the enemy. Rebuke him with the Word of God and keep trusting God. Yes you may not be where you want to be, but thanks be to God that you are NOT where you use to be. I have learned to see beyond my current circumstances. I know God is faithful and just. If my mom can cry out of concern, what about my heavenly Father who made me with his bare hands?
You may be going in circles in life and wondering is God even there, I am writing today layed in bed and in pain to tell you that YES GOD IS FAITHFUL and STILL ABLE. Do not lose hope or let go of His unchanging hand. Let him bring you through and praise Him along the way.
Though your beginning was small, Yet your latter end would increase abundantly – Job 8:7 (NKJV)
I am grateful for your faithfulness. Help me through my journey and keep me under the shadow of your wings. Teach me to see beyond my circumstances and to trust your will for my life…
I woke up this morning singing an old choir song.
When the battle is over
We shall wear a crown
We shall wear a crown
We shall wear a crown
When the battle is over
We shall wear a crown
In the NEW Jerusalem
At first I was just running it through my mind, but after a few runs I realized that I really started to get into it. There’s just something about knowing that a crown awaits you. With all of the challenges that we face in life, knowing that Jesus will crown us with a crown of glory empowers us to press on. The Apostle Paul tells us that I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus – Philippians 3:14 (KJV). We are being called to a higher plane but we are fighting an enemy and he is not going to let up just because we tell him to leave us alone.
This is why, we must arrive to the place in our lives where we proclaim Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him. – Job 13:15. God never promised us a smooth ride through life. Christianity doesnt promise a bed of roses. Many Christians have the erroneous notion that life gets trouble-free when we decide to follow Jesus and that satan has no power. WRONG! He has power and life will come with challenges BUT, greater is He that is in us that he that is in the world. – 1 John 4:4. We serve a mighty and able God. Therefore, we must walk and live in victory knowing that we have already won the battle through Christ Jesus.
I leave you with the lyrics and video of my new favorite song.
God is able to do
Just what he said he will do
He’s gonna fulfill every promise to you
Don’t give up on God
Cause He won’t give up on you
Remember, God is able!
Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. – 2 Chonicles 20:15
Thank you for already winning my battles. Teach me how to walk in victory and remind me daily that you are greater than the enemy…

So, last night after work the hubby and I went out to dinner at our favorite AUTHENTIC Italian restaurant in Park Slope – TUTTA PASTA. We just love this place. The dinner was fabulous and we enjoyed each others company and just being together. My Salmon Entree was AMAZING. Roasted Potatoes, asparagus and green peppers garnished my sauteed Salmon. Kenton had the Fettucine Alfredo with Chicken. As we enjoyed our dinner, I started to analyze how the devil almost caused me to ruin a perfectly good night over FOOLISHNESS.
Kenton and I agreed to meet @ Franklin Avenue which is a hop skip and a jump from Park Slope. When I got out of the station, I didn’t see him. I started to wonder what was taking him so long. Then, I received a phone call and He told me to cross Eastern Parkway to meet him as he was parked across the street. Ofcourse I started to whine. Why’d he have to go across the street? He always pick me up on this side (mind you what he did made more sense since we were headed in that direction anyway). I mean doesn’t he know I have these ridiculous heels on and it is such a trek to cross the parkway.(cause you know us women swear that our men are psychic and should know all things)UGHHHHH!
During my little rant while crossing the street, I heard a little voice say SHUT IT UP! (yup God has a sense of humor) He was right. What was I fussing about? All I was asked to do was CROSS THE STREET! As I pondered on my worthless argument, I realized that many of us do this in our spiritual lives. God tells us to do something simple (and reasonable) but we fuss and rant about it as though He is asking us to jump off a ledge. If I had allowed my emotions and thoughts to control the evening, we would not have enjoyed such a beautiful dinner. It makes me wonder how many things have we lost out on because we decided to let our human emotions get in the way of God’s divine will?
Sometimes, we just need to learn to do what we are told. Sometimes, we need to think before we speak. Not every battle is worth a fight. The next time you begin to feel angry or irritated about something, step back and think is your attitude warranted and is this battle worth it. I pray that my almost silly mistake last night, will prove to be a blessing to you all.
Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Teach me how to control my anger and help me to turn away all wrath with a tender word. Give me the discernment to know what battles are worth fighting and to live daily as a living example of Jesus Christ.
I have renewed my love for photography and have found a new location to feature some of my fun with the camera shots. Sweet Shot Tuesdays! The one below (and most of the shots on our blog) was captured through my beautiful mobile phone. I hope you enjoy!
This one was taken at the entrance of the Historic Trinity Church in New York City.

As always, we participate in the wonderful Multitude Monday program hosted by Ann Voskamp.
Earlier today, I posted a devotion on my friend Ritha’s trip to Haiti. Since her departure, we have kept in touch via email. The pictures she has sent me are touching and heart breaking (you can see them here). To see all of these precious CUTE children out on the street BREAKS my heart. Now more than ever, an attitude of Gratitude has become a crucial part of my life. When I think that I could have been in their place had it not been for the grace of God, I just have to be grateful.
I thank God for everything He has done, is doing and WILL DO for me and my family. Remember, you are owed nothing but GOD still provides for your needs. So, PRAISE HIM!
Today, I am grateful for:
#22 – I am alive
#23 – I have food
#24 – I HAVE A JOB (I know, I know, I am grateful for this every week but have you heard about the economy?)
#24 – I am writing my first book
#25 – TODAY IS PAYDAY!
What are you grateful for? SHARE!
My sister in Christ, mentee and friend, Ritha, always wanted to go on a mission trip to Haiti. However, things just always seem to fall through. Then, on January 12th, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude Earthquake hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti and killed over 200,000 people. That did it for Ritha. She set out to go to Haiti and this time she wasn’t going to miss her opportunity.
She sent a letter to all of the student groups @ Fordham Law where she attends and asked if any were interested in going to Haiti. One replied affirmatively. They began to plan the trip and @ the 11th hour the dean approved the trip (which is the first of its kind at the school). On Sunday, March 14th, 2010 Ritha landed in Cabaret, Haiti with 14 students from the Fordham Law Disaster Relief Network and the Dean of Student Affairs. Since then she has been sending me tons of pictures of the devastation and life in Haiti. (We will be featuring these photos on our site as they come in.)
Many of us have felt a tug at our heart to get involved, support or start a particular ministry. We give it a try and at the first sign of failure we throw our hands up in the air and give up. Ritha could have given up on her desire to serve her country but she didnt . She persisted and when one door shut, she pursued another. As Christians, we must never allow the enemy to cause us to grow weary in doing good.
He knows that if we all were to stannd up for what is right and fulfill the missions God is calling us to do, the world would come to God. It is time that our lives are no longer just about our comfort zones and little world in a bubble. There are millions out there who we can help in some way or fashion. Some of them are right in our backyard.
Jesus showed us that in order to be a leader, we must first be a servant. We must learn to serve on another instead of just shouting out orders. Is there something God has been calling you to do that you have just pushed aside? If so, isn’t it time you made it happen?
I pray that we will all learn a little something from Ritha’s determination and heart for mission.
And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
– Mark 9:35, KJV”
Thank you for teaching me that I am to have a heart of a servant. Show me where I can be useful to your children and give me the courage to step out in faith..
